First Prize at The Venous Forum 2014 for Whiteley Clinic Research

The Venous Forum of The Royal Society of Medicine, is the UK's national meeting for vein surgery and venous conditions. The Annual Meeting is held in London in April each year.

Presenting his prize winning paper at the Venous Forum 2014
This year, The Whiteley Clinic research team had a particularly successful meeting, building on the Poster Prize that they won last year at the same meeting. Salil Patel, a medical student who came to work at The Whiteley Clinic for his summer holiday in summer 2013, won the first Prize for his research into Foam Sclerotherapy, supervised by Professor Mark Whiteley.

as Whiteley Clinic Summer Research Fellow

Salil's research showed the effects of temperature, altitude, volume, gas and different syringe types on the formation of foam for Foam Sclerotherapy. This research has already been implemented into The Whiteley Protocol (TM) , making sure that all Whiteley Clinic patients get the very latest and best vein treatments possible.

presents his research into sclerotherapy treatment of varicose veins
At the same meeting, Chris Lee, PhD student at The Whiteley Clinic and University of Surrey, presented his research looking at how sclerotherapy works in varicose veins, using a technique called immunocytochemistry. By using this antibody technique, Chris has been able to track how the sclerotherapy works in the laboratory - this has given us huge insights into how to improve vein treatments further.

Jade Davidson, reflexologist at The Whiteley Clinic and Rosey Feet Reflexology
with her research presented as a poster at The Venous forum 2014

Jade Davidson, reflexologist at Rosey Feet, came along to present the results of her randomised controlled trial. This study showed that using hand reflexology on patients whilst they underwent local anaesthetic varicose veins treatments, significantly reduced anxiety in patients having the treatment.

Finally Professor Mark Whiteley gave one lecture on the future of varicose vein surgery in the UK
in the private sector, as the NHS and private medical insurers seem to be withdrawing from funding venous disease and then took part in a debate on local anaesthetic varicose vein surgery.

EVLT in Bristol - Whiteley Clinic starts local anaesthetic laser for Varicose Veins in Bristol

This morning (22nd May 2014) Prof Mark Whiteley is performing the first Bristol Whiteley Clinic case of EVLT.

Using Angiodynamics "Gold Tip" Never Touch Direct fibres, Professor Whiteley and his team are treating 2 patients with varicose veins under local anaesthetic.

This laser surgery is called "ambulatory surgery" as patients walk in, have their veins treated under local anaesthetic with keyhole surgery, and then walk out again.

After EVLT surgery under local anaesthetic, patients are usually back to driving and back to work the day after the surgery. Traditional surgery usually takes 2 weeks to recover from!

Thread vein treatments in Daily Mail - Mark Whiteley featured by Sarah Vine

In today's Daily Mail (15th of May 2014), top beauty journalist Sarah Vine has written an article entitled "How to get rid of those pesky little thread veins". http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2628556/Sarah-Vine-Beauty-Sleuth-How-rid-pesky-little-thread-veins.html

In the article, Sarah quotes Prof Mark Whiteley as "the best person, in my personal experience".

Leg thread veins are much harder to treat them was originally thought and proper treatment entails duplex ultrasound scan of the underlying veins to find out if there is a cause that needs to be addressed before the thread veins are treated.

Almost 9/10 people with thread veins have an underlying cause - usually "hidden varicose veins". Failure to identify these with duplex ultrasound scan and treating them with one of the new local anaesthetic pinhole vein techniques often leads to failure of the thread vein treatment - wasting time and money and sometimes causing permanent damage to the skin.
