On Friday 11th July, The Whiteley Clinic hosted a school trip of 10 school students from St. Peter's Catholic School, Guildford.

As part of The Whiteley Clinic's commitment to teaching and research, Consultants and Research Fellows from The Whiteley Clinic took the students through several skills and quick talks related to medicine.

Mr Barrie Price, Consultant Surgeon, welcomed the students and showed the students how to stitch skin together using skin models.

Varicose veins and Haemorrhoids (Hemorrhoids)

Published research suggests a link between leg varicose veins and haemorrhoids (hemorrhoids or "piles").

Current treatments for haemorrhoids, including cutting them away or using laser or surgery to destroy the haemorrhoidal artery (hemorrhoidal), may be sub-optimal.

Research about to published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery; Venous and Lymphatic Disorders shows that more than 1 in 4 women with recurrent varicose veins in the legs, have a major problem with pelvic varicose veins that has previously been missed.

Despite over a decade of research into this area from The Whiteley Clinic, most varicose vein surgeons and clinics still do not check for pelvic varicose veins.

As such, this research suggests that over 1 in 4 women undergoing varicose vein procedures are having incomplete treatment and are much more likely to get the varicose veins back again after intervention.

PAVA - A New sort of Varicose Vein described by Whiteley Clinic researchers

PAVA - Primary Avalvular Varicose Anomalies - are a new sort of varicose vein that have been discovered and described by The Whiteley Clinic research team. Their findings are being published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery Venous and Lymphatic Disorders.

PAVA are small varicose veins, often wrapped around big varicose veins, that do not get treated by normal varicose vein treatments.

Failure to identify them and treat them may lead to recurrent varicose veins in the future being erroneously thought of as "neovascular tissue" or the re-growth of veins after varicose vein treatments.

Immunohistochemistry of varicose vein wall after Sclerotherapy

Chris Lee, PhD student at The Whiteley Clinic and University of Surrey, presented his research looking a the changes of the vein wall in varicose veins after sclerotherapy, using immunohistochemistry.

This was one of 2 papers presented a the meeting involving The Whitely Clinic. The second paper was the results of Venseal Glue for the treatment of varicose veins in the European Multicentre study.

Venous foot ulcer cured by The Whiteley Protocol (TM)

This 84 year old lady has been admitted to Accident and Emergency on 2 separate occasions, bleeding from her left foot ulcer. One of these hospital departments as in a teaching hospital!

On each occasion, the bleeding was stopped and the patient discharged home with compression stockings. She was not offered any treatment to cure her or to stop it happening again.

The ulcer became so painful that she couldn't wear shoes and found it hard to walk. Her GP took a biopsy which made the ulcer worse.

Fortunately the lady heard about The Whiteley Clinic and The Whiteley Protocol (TM) from a friend and came for an extended duplex ultrasound scan 6 weeks ago.

The scan showed "hidden varicose veins" which were treated 4 weeks ago by local anaesthetic EVLT (endovenous laser therapy) and TRLOP (Transluminal Occlusion of Perforators) which was invented by Prof Mark Whiteley.

ulcer is almost healed and the patient is wearing shoes and playing golf again! 

Four weeks later, the ulcer is almost healed, she can wear shoes again and walk well - and has even managed to return to playing golf again.

The Leg Ulcer charity is performing a research study, asking patients with leg ulcers or those who care for them, to answer an online questionnaire. Varicose veins of vagina and vulva - Prof Mark Whiteley featured in Daily Mail

Women suffering from varicose veins of the vagina and vulva is a common problem after childbirth that can now be cured. Unfortunately most gynaecologists and midwives don't seem to know this and so women are left to suffer without curative treatment.

Since 2000, Prof Mark Whiteley and his team have been researching pelvic varicose veins - the cause of pelvic congestion syndrome and varicose veins of the vagina and vulva. They have perfected the Transvaginal Duplex Ultrasound scan which their research shows is far superior to CT, MRI and venograms to find out the source of pelvic varicose veins.

Once found, these can be treated under X-ray control using a technique called "Coil Embolisation". Through a single needle hole, a special catheter can be passed through the venous system into the pelvic veins that are causing the problem. A metal coil can then be passed into the vein, causing it to contract and permanently close.

After 6 weeks, many of the visible varicose veins have gone and most of the discomfort and pain caused by the varicose veins has also been cured. Any remaining veins can be injected with foam sclerotherapy using the Carbon Dioxide/Oxygen foam technique published by The Whiteley Clinic that is much safer than the original Air foam technique.
