Today we finished filming a complex case of recurrent varicose veins of the legs and vulval and vaginal varicose veins, for Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.

Donna had previously been sent to a vascular surgeon who does not do veins all of the time, and so threatened her with traditional stripping.

Of course this grew back again - AND he missed the fact that she had vulval and vaginal varicose veins from pelvic vein reflux.

The Whiteley Clinic is the leading clinic in this sort of condition and so has treated her over a course of local anaesthetic procedures.

Today was her last procedure - after coil embolisation of her pelvic veins, she had endovenous laser of her saphenous veins, TRLOP of perforators, ambulatory phlebectomies - and today had ultrasound guide foam sclerotherapy.

Teaching endovenous surgery remotely - UK to Australia

Last night, Mark Whiteley conducted a 4 hour series of lectures and teaching remotely from The Clinical Exchange in The Whiteley Clinic (Guildford, UK) to a group of trainees in Australia.

As The Whiteley Clinic is the Angiodynamics International Training Centre, Mark Whiteley and his team usually run workshops and training in Guildford in the UK or at International Vein Meetings.

However, Mark Whiteley and Matt Jago have also set up a clinical training unit - The Clinical Exchange - allowing remote teaching to anywhere in the world.

Through the Clinical Exchange, lectures, tutorials and even operations can be performed live, with the audience able to ask questions or comment during the teaching.

In this article, Mark Whiteley explains why he wouldn't have his varicose veins stripped under a general anaesthetic.

Not only is stripping more painful than the new endovenous techniques (like endovenous laser ablation - EVLA and radiofrequency ablation - RFA) but following stripping, there is a higher chance of the veins coming back again than after treatment of varicose veins using the new endovenous techniques.

In addition, no-one should have a general anaesthetic for the treatment of varicose veins anymore. Under general anaesthetic, there are higher risks of deep vein thrombosis than using local anaesthetic - and also of nerve damage as patients are unable to say if the procedure hurts.

Excellent results for Venaseal "superglue" treatment for varicose veins

The Venaseal "superglue" treatment for varicose veins is one of the new and very exciting treatments for leg veins.

Unlike laser and radiofrequency, there is no heat generated in the treatment and so there is no need for "tumescent" anaesthesia. This means that Venaseal treatment needs only one local anaesthetic injection for each major vein treated.

The question has always been - "Does it work"?

Well these 2 ultrasound pictures show excellent results in one of our patients 6 months after Venaseal "superglue" treatment of their Great Saphenous Vein for Varicose Veins.

The first picture (above) shows the ultrasound of the Great Saphenous Vein in cross-section. The vein is seen as a black circle in the middle of the picture.

Six months later the vein is not only closed, but is has virtually disappeared (see second picture above).

Research at The Whiteley Clinic has shown us that when a vein reacts like this, it is a sign that the vein has been completely destroyed and will not open up again in the future.

So far all of the patients we have treated with the Venaseal superglue have had the same excellent results. we are now confident to offer Venaseal to our patients as part of The Whiteley Protocol(TM).

Emily set up her company, Emily Jane's Foods having gone onto the Marshall Protocol having suffered from chronic ill-health. She was advised to stop eating sugars and refined carbohydrates - but she still wanted to enjoy food such as pizzas, brownies and ice cream.

So she set about developing ways to make these foods without using sugar - and using only natural products. She will not use artificial sweeteners.

Spider veins and leg thread veins due to underlying varicose veins

Thread veins on the legs (also known as "spider veins" of the legs) are usually associated with underlying "hidden varicose veins" - medically called "superficial venous reflux".

Treating the surface thread vein or spider veins without performing a scan to find the underlying "hidden varicose veins" can lead to failed thread vein treatment - wasting time and money.

Today there is an excellent article on Varicose Veins in men in The Daily Mail by John McEntee and featuring Mark Whiteley.

It discusses the fact hat although most people think that varicose veins affect women predominantly, research has shown that at least as many men - in not more - get varicose veins. They just don't go to doctors to get treated.

Te article also points out that both the NHS and private medical insurers are trying to get out of paying for varicose vein treatments. It is harder and harder to get varicose veins treated on the NHS or under private insurance - meaning that varicose vein treatments are becoming something that people need to pay for themselves.

As such such, it would be sensible for patients needing varicose vein surgery to make sure that they go to the paces with the best outcomes - which might not be the cheapest.

The Whiteley Clinic Summer Research Fellow posts for 2013 have now been filled.

Summer Research Fellow posts 2014:

We are now inviting expressions of interest from Medical Students or from BSc students or 6^th College Students who wish to apply to medical school with a view to training to be a doctor.

Successful fellows will be given a research project or audit to perform, with a view to get the work presented and published. For those wanting to maximise their time at The Whiteley Clinic, there are often other projects that the fellows can participate in, to increase their experience and CV.

Applicants need to be able to attend The Whiteley Clinic in Guildford full time for a minimum of 6 weeks during the summer.

Timing:

Informal visits and discussions are encouraged – please arrange via Kate Wilde or Debra Kehoe thorough The Whiteley Clinic contact page, by letter or e-mail.

Deadline for applications will be 1^st November 2013.

Interviews for Summer 2014 will be held in November / December 2013, to allow time for planning the projects the following summer.
