25th Feb - Embarrassing Bodies featuring Whiteley Clinic

Embarrassing Bodies - Monday 25th February, Channel 4 at 9 pm.

A patient with complex recurrent varicose veins after previous failed "stripping" surgery and with vaginal and vulval varicose veins, was followed thorough her treatment at The Whiteley Clinic by Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.

Donna came to The Whiteley Clinic having had recurrent varicose veins following traditional surgery under general anaesthetic elsewhere.

The experts at The Whiteley Clinic found the underlying cause of her recurrent varicose veins and vaginal varicose veins, using the specialised Duplex Ultrasound scanner and transvaginal scanning.

She was treated by The Whiteley Protocol - Firstly by pelvic vein embolisation by Dr Tony Lopez at The Imaging Clinic - and then using endovenous laser, TRLOP, phlebectomy and foam sclerotherapy all in stages under local anaesthetic at The Whiteley Clinic.

Today we finished filming a complex case of recurrent varicose veins of the legs and vulval and vaginal varicose veins, for Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies.

Donna had previously been sent to a vascular surgeon who does not do veins all of the time, and so threatened her with traditional stripping.

Of course this grew back again - AND he missed the fact that she had vulval and vaginal varicose veins from pelvic vein reflux.

The Whiteley Clinic is the leading clinic in this sort of condition and so has treated her over a course of local anaesthetic procedures.

Today was her last procedure - after coil embolisation of her pelvic veins, she had endovenous laser of her saphenous veins, TRLOP of perforators, ambulatory phlebectomies - and today had ultrasound guide foam sclerotherapy.

Research performed by 2 of The Whiteley Clinic Summer reseach fellows this year - Daniel Taylor and Alice Whiteley - has been accepted for the prestigous American Venous Forum to be held in Phoenix, Arizona next year.

Alice Whiteley is one of two Whiteley Clinic Summer Research Fellows who have had their research selected for presentation at The Medical Acorn Foundation (National Medical Student Research Conference) in Leicester on 13th October 2012.

Presenting her research into the cause of recurrent varicose veins operated on elsewhere 

Alice spent her summer analysing the results from patients seeking help from The Whiteley Clinic having had varicose vein surgery elsewhere and then getting recurrent varicose veins.

She identified the causes of their recurrent varicose veins, and found that pelvic venous reflux is one of the major causes, a problem that has previously been ignored.

 

Alice's research presents powerful evidence for why the pelvic veins need to be scanned and, if refluxing, treated, to reduce the risks of recurrent varicose veins in the future.

Her work has been submitted for an American meeting next year and will be submittied for UK vein meetings next year, before submitting for publication.
