Today is the 11 year anniversary of the first keyhole operation for Varicose Veins in the UK.

On 12th March 1999, Mark Whiteley performed the first VNUS Closure in the UK using a "keyhole" technique, under General Anaesthetic in Guildford.

In the last 11 years, Mark and his team have:

• moved the keyhole surgery for varicose veins from General Anaesthetic Surgery to a walk in walk out local anaesthetic procedure,
• set up The Whiteley Clinic aas a centre of excellence for Varicose Veins Treatment
• set up The Clinical Exchange - a teaching facility to teach office based vein techniques to doctors and nurses
• invented TRLOP a procedure to treat perforator veins
• won several prizes and published many papers
• proven that Stripping of the Veins only causes them to grow back again and shouldn't be done
• developed treatment for pelvic varicose veins and vulvar / vaginal varicose veins
• integrated treatments to get the best results possible for patients with Varicose Veins using combinations of RFiTT (radiofrequency ablation), EVLA (laser), ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy, coil embolisation, TRLOP, phlebectomy and microsclerotherapy
