Want to get to Medical School? Open Day this Saturday for the Pre-Med Taster Course

This Saturday, The Clinical Exchange in Guildford is having an open day to show students and parents the Pre-Med Taster Course.

This course, that runs weekly from September to November and January to March each year, is aimed at school or college students who want to go to Medical School.

Taught by Consultants and General Practitioners, the course covers a wide variety of practical and theory subjects - and gives the delegates one-to-one interviews at the end of their course.

Each delegate gets a certificate whcih can be included in the personal statement when appying for a place at Medical School.

The open day is 11 am to 3 pm this Saturday 2nd July.

New website explaining phlebitis


Phlebitis is one of the most incorrectly diagnosed venous conditions.

Many doctors and nurses incorrectly diagnose any redness around the ankles as "phelbitis", and then incorrectly treat - often with antibiotics which have no place in treating phlebitis.

This website explains phlebitis, how to diagnose it correctly and how to treat it.

5,000 th Local Anaesthetic Procedure at The Whiteley Clinic

This morning saw the 5,000 th Local Anaesthetic Procedure at The Whiteley Clinic in Guildford.

Mr Tim Watkins pictured above with the team (Vascular Technologist Charlie Harrison, Sister Carrie Wheeler, Staff Nurse Rosemary Hudson and Surgeon Mark Whiteley) is pictured having just had Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) to both legs.

As with all local anaesthetic walk-in walk-out surgery performed at The Whiteley Clinic, Mr Watkins was walking home 30 minutes later.

Having performed over 5,000 general anaesthetic endovenous procedures from 1999 - 2005, and now 5000 procedure under local anaesthetic procedures since 2005, this total of cases keeps The Whiteley Clinic as one of the most experienced clinics in endovenous or "keyhole" vein surgery in the world.

This weekend, Mark Whiteley will be presenting his research into Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) and his own development Endoscopic Laser Sweat Ablation (ELSA) for axillary hyperhidrosis (armpit sweating) at an international conference in Denmark.

The conference, the ISSS (International Symposium on Sympathetic Surgery) specialises in surgery on the sympathetic nervous system - that controls sweating.
