BBC Online today - and an Italian article .....

Today the video of the first LSA - Laser Sweat Ablation - was put up on BBC online. You can view it on the link .

There was also an article that appeared about me in the Italian press: although my Italian is unfortunately somewhat limited!!!

I put all of my research publications, prizes and lectures on but haven't managed to complete the laser sweating website - I had some questions e-mailed to me and I would like to have the answers to them up on the site before I publish it.

  1. I'd be interested to hear in what way the laser was crucial to the LSE process, what kind of a laser it was, and what were the laser parameters used?

  2. Thank you for your question - although anonymously posted!!!
LSE is I think the London School of Economics and so is clearly on lots of people’s minds at present - the Laser Sweat Ablation is the LSA procedure.
The work by Dr Blugerman that has been published shows that the use of the laser destroys the sweat glands - he has published histology to show this.
Some people use a similar technique without layering it first. As the laser has been shown to destroy the sweat glands, then by using the laser, the chances of a complete cure are higher than the suction removal only.
The laser is the Nd:YAG 1064nm as is quoted in the papers.
We will be publishing our parameters and technique when we have more patients thorough and proven results. The exact parameters and precise technique has been modified by Dr Blugerman and other workers since the original publications.

  3. I was wondering, if this new LSA method is used in other countries in Europe? I am from the Netherlands and can't wait to get treated with this method. Do you know if Holland or another country does the same treatment ? Or will there be in the near future? I can imagine there must be quite a lot of people interested in it.

    Thanx in advance,

  4. Hi Thijs,
As far as I know, there is one doctor practicing this operation using a very similar (but slightly different) method in Croatia. He presented 17 cases at a meeting in January this year in Paris.
Apart from him, I don't know of anyone else doing this in Europe so far.
All of the patients that we are seeing will have a complete work up of tests before and after their surgery - so in a few months time we should be able to produce some really nice results of how effective it is.
We are working on a training course for later this year and so hopefully there should be surgeons offering this treatment around Europe by early next year – if not a little sooner.

  5. Hello there,

My dermatologist in the hospital does not want to write a letter for me to get treated by this new method. The reason is there is none official publications (e.g. pubmed). Can you tell me if, and when there will be official documentations put online? It would be a great help, because I want to go to England to get treated....

    Thanx in advance.

    Thijs from Holland

  6. Hi Thijs,

I do have a copy of one of Dr Blugerman's publications on this method.

I will look it out and publish it here.

    Best wishes, Mark

  8. Thanx a lot! I've just sent an email to my dermatologist with these two links. It's been a struggle just to get him to write a letter for my insurance company, let alone the struggle I will have with the insurance company, as I want them to pay for it. I've been suffering from axillary Huperhidrosis for 20 years now, and I'm so completely fed up with it.

    Thanx again.

    Greetings Thijs
