This week we had our 2,000th person registering on the veins screening website (http://www.veinsscreening.co.uk/).


The veins screening website is the first interactive website that screens people with leg problems and tells them whether their problems might be due to vein problems or not. People register and then answer a series of questions that identify the chances that their problems are due to varicose veins or other venous conditions.

At the end of the questionnaire, the website gives the person an opinion about their symptoms and then recommends what they should do about their problem.p

Dr Luke Matar completed his Endovenous Training at The Whiteley Clinic this week.

Pictured above with Mr Barrie Price (left) and Mr Mark Whiteley (right) Dr Luke Matar is an interventional radiologist with an interest in treating varicose veins. He practices in Perth, Australia.

During his training, Luke underwent lectures into the new understanding of venous physiology as well as the new concepts of venous treatments.

He observed, then assisted and finally performed EVLA (endovenous laser), RFiTT (radiofrequency), phlebectomy, and foam sclerotherapy.

As with all of the doctors and nurses that train at The Whiteley Clinic through The Clinical Exchange courses, Luke will have open access to our expertise in the future by e-mail and web link - and will be a member of the new College of Phlebology to be launched soon.

Want to get to Medical School? Open Day this Saturday for the Pre-Med Taster Course

This Saturday, The Clinical Exchange in Guildford is having an open day to show students and parents the Pre-Med Taster Course.

This course, that runs weekly from September to November and January to March each year, is aimed at school or college students who want to go to Medical School.

Taught by Consultants and General Practitioners, the course covers a wide variety of practical and theory subjects - and gives the delegates one-to-one interviews at the end of their course.

Each delegate gets a certificate whcih can be included in the personal statement when appying for a place at Medical School.

The open day is 11 am to 3 pm this Saturday 2nd July.

Phlebitis is one of the most incorrectly diagnosed venous conditions.

5,000 th Local Anaesthetic Procedure at The Whiteley Clinic

This morning saw the 5,000 th Local Anaesthetic Procedure at The Whiteley Clinic in Guildford.

Mr Tim Watkins pictured above with the team (Vascular Technologist Charlie Harrison, Sister Carrie Wheeler, Staff Nurse Rosemary Hudson and Surgeon Mark Whiteley) is pictured having just had Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) to both legs.

As with all local anaesthetic walk-in walk-out surgery performed at The Whiteley Clinic, Mr Watkins was walking home 30 minutes later.

Having performed over 5,000 general anaesthetic endovenous procedures from 1999 - 2005, and now 5000 procedure under local anaesthetic procedures since 2005, this total of cases keeps The Whiteley Clinic as one of the most experienced clinics in endovenous or "keyhole" vein surgery in the world.

This weekend, Mark Whiteley will be presenting his research into Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) and his own development Endoscopic Laser Sweat Ablation (ELSA) for axillary hyperhidrosis (armpit sweating) at an international conference in Denmark.

The conference, the ISSS (International Symposium on Sympathetic Surgery) specialises in surgery on the sympathetic nervous system - that controls sweating.

Vogue - July issue - Mark Whiteley to be featured

In the July 2011 edition of Vogue, Mark Whiteley is featured as one of the doctors in an article written by Kate Morris in the Vogue Beauty section.

Completion of bespoke Endovenous Course at The Whiteley Clinic

Today sees the completion of a very successful bespoke Endovenous Course at The Whiteley Clinic, run by The Clinical Exchange.

Dr Hussein Safar and Dr Abdulaziz Al-Muzaini, leading vascular surgeons in Kuwait, joined The Whiteley Clinic team for the whole range of endovenous procedures including EVLA (laser), RFiTT / RFA (Radiofrequency), TRLOP (perforator vein Closure), ambulatory phlebectomy, foam sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy.

In addition, we discussed the latest research into how venous problems occur and also the latest treatments for veins and leg ulcers - particluarly complex recurrent varicose veins that had been treated elsewhere using more dated techniques and had recurred.

As with all of the visitors to The Whiteley Clinic courses, we will be keeping in close contact with our new friends in Kuwait providing advice and support whenever needed.

Mark Whiteley speaking at Endovenous Forum in Barcelona

Tomorrow afternoon, Mark Whiteley will be giving an invited talk at the Endovenous Forum at 9th International Symposium on Endovascular Therapies in Barcelona as part of the faculty of the meeting http://site2011.atlantacongress.org/ponentes

His talk will be "Ablation techniques for perforator vein incompetence: Methods and results".

In it, he will present the TRLOP (TRansLuminal Occlusion of Perforator) technique that Mark and Judy Holdstock invented in 1999 and the results of the TRLOP technique used with different catheter devices.

He will also explain that PAP (Perforator Ablation Procedure) that "appeared" in the USA in about 2004, following a talk the Mark gave in Miami, is essentially exactly the same procedure.

Therefore to save confusion, it would be sensible if the original name for the procedure was used - TRLOP.

Mark will also be presenting some comparative data between different Radiofrequency devices and Lasers showing which are best to use with TRLOP to ablate incompetent perforating veins.

Whiteley Clinic research fellow presents at National meeting

George Badham, one of the Whiteley Clinic Summer Research Fellows from 2010, presented his research today at a National meeting in London.

His research was looking at how to optimise our treatment of Varicose Veins using the new RFiTT device from Celon and Olympus.

This device, that has been used for varicose vein surgery in Europe for some years, has only had success rates of about 90% - which is not good enough for The Whiteley Clinic. It has also associated with difficulty in treating due to the device sticking.

George Badham's research was to look into Mark Whiteley's Theory that the device was fine, but the technique that was being used was wrong.

Using a bench top model, George Badham showed not only that the current technique is flawed but if The Whiteley Clinic method of using RFiTT is used, all of the problems are overcome.

Mark Whiteley in The Times - Laser Sweat Ablation for Hyperidrosis and Bromhidrosis

Today in the Times, there is an article on Mark Whiteley and the operation he has been developing for under-arm sweating and smell called Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) - The Times 2 - Body & Soul, Page 8 and 9.

This article concentrates on 2 patients recently treated by Mark at The Whiteley Clinic. One had LSA for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating from the under-arms) and axillary bromhidrosis (abnormally bad smelling sweat from the arm-pits).

It explains how Mark and his research fellow, Sophie Strong, have been developing the LSA operation using different experiments and techniques to improve the results.

Mark Whiteley is lecturing today at the office-based venous surgery course at The 33rd Charing Cross Vascular Course.

Mark ran a rolling lecture session with Kieran Mcride from the Scottish Vein Centre and Steve Elias from the USA.

Mark Whiteley was absolutely delighted to be included in the Tatler Beauty and Cosmetic Surgery Guide 2011 that came out this week.

Mark was featured in 2 different areas of the guide.

World's first ELSA - Endoscopic Laser Sweat Ablation

This morning Mark Whiteley performed the world's first ELSA - Endoscopic Laser Sweat Ablation.

Having performed the first Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) in the UK as a permanent cure for under arm sweating in March 2009, Mark and his team at The Whiteley Clinic have been modifying and improving the LSA technique over the last 2 years.

Today saw the unveiling of the latest development - ELSA. Using a keyhole surgery or "endoscopic" camera, Mark and his team were able to monitor the Laser Sweat Ablation procedure, making sure that the treatment was effective as possible.

ELSA should continue to improve the results of this permanent, walk-in walk-out procedure to stop underarm sweating.

Expert Beauty - Spring 2011

Mark Whiteley was featured in Expert Beauty Magazine - Spring 2011 - for his work on Varicose Veins.

This new magazine, available in WH Smiths, and also with a Facebook page under (Expert Beauty Official) is run by doctors and specialists in the medical and aesthetics industry.

As such it is an authoritative magazine containing articles and information of great interest and accuracy. It should grow to be a very useful magazine to anyone who wants to have any aesthetic or cosmetic work done.

Pre-Medical School Taster Course at The Clinical Exchange - March 2011

Last night we completed the Spring 2011 pre-medical school taster course held at The Clinical Exchange in Guildford.

The course entailed one evening a week for 8 weeks, with lectures on medical subjects, hands on experience of stitching, injecting, taking blood, ultrasound, and mock medical school interviews.

Sunday Times Article - Mark Whiteley quoted

Mark Whiteley was quoted today in the Sunday Times (The Sunday Times, 6th March 2011, Page 7 - "Chill out, chubby: ultrasound and freezing to end yo-yo diets").

Mark and his colleague, Vicki Smith director of Absolute Aesthetics, have been the UK centre for a multi-centre international trial of Liposonix over the last year.

Liposonix is a HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) machine that has been designed to destroy fat deposits on the abdomen non-invasively. It is not used for removing large mounts of fat - only dieting or liposuction will do that. However for stubborn areas of fat on the belly, or for love handles, the HIFU can be used to destroy these fat cells and therefore allow body countouring.

Mark Whiteley has been investigating the use of Liposonix for over a year and has presented his work at IMCAS in Paris in 2010 and recently at The Royal Society of Medicine (see earlier in this blog).

Guildford Minis Rugby C Festival - 20th Feb 2011 - Sponsored by The Whiteley Clinic



The Guildford Minis Rugby C Festival was held on Sunday 20th February 2011. Some 700 rugby players from under 7's to under 12's took part, everyone having a fantastic time.

The Guildford Rugby club orgainsed the whole event. Not only was there some very exciting rugby, but there was a great Hog Roast, bar with open fire and several areas for tea, coffee and food.

The Whiteley Clinic is delighted to be sponsoring The Guildford Rugby Minis Festival 2011.

Each year, Guildford Rugby Club runs a "minis" festival hosting rugby competitions for young rugby players. This year there are 3 festivals - the first on Sunday 20th February at Broadwater on the Godalming road.

At this event there will be Under 7's, Under 8's, Under 9's, Under 10's, Under 11's and Under 12's. Competing teams will be: Guildford, E&L, Old Reigatians, Teddington, Chobham, S&E, Cobham and Battersea.

 

At The Whiteley Clinic we are very keen to promote sport and healthy events - particularly when helping our young have opportunity to achieve their potential.

Mark Whiteley was quoted in The Times Magazine today - 15th Jan 2010.

In an article by Sarah Vine called "Purple vein, purple veins" (page 51, The Times Magazine) Mark Whiteley explained the difference between "Thread Veins" of the face - and those of the legs which need far more in-depth understanding to treat successfully.

Thread veins on the face can be very successfully treated by several methods, available at Absolute Aesthetics (www.AbsoluteAesthetics.co.uk).

Leg thread veins however need a specialist Duplex Ultrasound Scan to find out what the underlying cause is and to make sure the correct treatment is planned - which is often to hidden varicose veins deep inside the leg and unseen under the leg thread veins. Sophie Strong - Whiteley Clinic Research Fellow presents at IMCAS - Paris 2011

Sophie Strong, research fellow at The Whiteley Clinic and medical student at Kings College in London, presented her first research paper today at the IMCAS meeting in Paris.

IMCAS - the International MasterClass of Aging Skin - is one of the biggest medical aesthetics conferences in Europe.

Sophie presented the results of the first year's Laser Sweat Ablation at The Whiteley Clinic and discussed the lessons that have been learned as well as the modifications that we have made to this new operation.

Another leg ulcer cured with The Whiteley Protocol(TM)

This lady, in her 80's, attended The Whiteley Clinic in September this year, with a left leg ulcer (see first photo). She had been "treated" by her local doctors and nurses for over a year with bandages, dressings, elevation and she had been given a "Doppler" test. She had been told there was nothing else that could be done for her.

As with a great many people that we see at The Whiteley Clinic with leg ulcers, the ulcer appeared to do well when it was dressed and bandaged, but broke out again as soon as the bandaging was stopped.

No one had offered her a cure.

Having heard about The Whiteley Clinic from one of her carers who had seen us sure another lady with a leg ulcer, this patient came for a scan and consultation.

Using our specialist team, we identified the underlying problem and treated her in one local anaesthetic "walk-in walk-out" procedure - as in The Whiteley Protocol (TM).


8 weeks after the local anaesthetic keyhole procedure, the lady is walking without any discomfort from her ulcer, and her leg ulcer is almost completely healed. There is one small area that has a superficial scab that will heal fully in the next 2 - 4 weeks.

She does not need any dressings, bandages nor stockings - and this cure should be permanent as the underlying cause has been corrected.

The Clinical Exchange - A place to teach local anasethetic interventions, surgery and laser procedures

Each room can have 2 HD remote cameras to show every part of the procedure being demonstrated or taught. A 2 way audio link allows delegates to question the demonstrating clinician throughout the treatment.

For those who want to demonstrate their techniques or products widely, The Clinical Exchange also allows live procedures and techniques to be broadcast via the Internet or other data transfer techniques to remote locations.

Finally, the The Clinical Exchange can also make DVD's and YouTube videos to help promote techniques, equipment or practices.

Pre-Medicine Taster Course at The Clinical Exchange

This week saw the successful completion of the first Pre-Medicine Taster Course run by The Whiteley Clinic at The Clinical Exchange.

This course runs over 8 weeks for one evening per week. It is aimed at students from 14 - 18 who want to go to medical school.

We have just finished running our first GP Minor Surgery course at The Clinical Exchange.

Situated above The Whiteley Clinic operating theatres, we have a video link allowing real time observation of local anaesthetic or laser procedures by up to 48 delegates.

The audio visual link allows the delegates to ask questions of the surgeon and patient during the procedure to enable the very best teaching and learning environment.

The Clinical Exchange runs a series of clinical courses throughout the year and leases out its premises for companies or individuals that want to run courses or promote their products with live demonstrations.

Venous eczema and varicose veins treated by The Whiteley Protocol

A new Whiteley Clinic video is launched on You Tube. The patient is a man who had venous eczema and discolouration of the ankle due to varicose veins.

Before coming to The Whiteley Clinic he had been advised only to have support stockings.

He was cured by walk-in walk-out local anaesthetic surgery using The Whiteley Protocol.

Our investigations showed her veins came from her pelvis - so she underwent pelvic vein embolisation as part of her procedure.

New website on Venous Eczema

We are delighted to launch the new Venous Eczema website:

Venous Eczema is one of a host of under diagnosed conditions related to varicose veins and venous reflux (hidden varicose veins).

Many people have red or brown stains on their legs due to venous eczema. Unfortunately as the underlying venous reflux is often hidden away (hidden varicose veins) GP's and nurses often just give steroid creams or other creams to try to make it feel better.

Although this stops any itching for a while, it doesn't take away the underlying cause - that of the venous reflux (or hidden varicose veins) - meaning it continues to worsen and head towards leg ulceration.

RFiTT in Grazia magazine

This week Grazia magazine is running an article on the new RFiTT technique for treating varicose veins - and it quotes Mark Whiteley whose clinic has been doing research to improve the results of this technique.

RFiTT is a radiofrequency device that is used through a keyhole (or pinhole) approach, that closes Varicose Veins using heat. The treatment is all controlled by ultrasound to make sure that the target vein is completed destroyed.

Research on RFiTT performed this summer at The Whiteley Clinic by George Badham - Whiteley Clinic research fellow - won 3rd Prize at the IVEC and ISVS in Milan, in October this year.
